Advent’s last Wednesday

The lesson here, for me, is to greet each person with a readiness and willingness to see the goodness in them, first and foremost.   Today’s reading inspires me to welcome warmly all who cross my path with expectant joy.

I offer the following prayer from the Irish Jesuits for your reflections and revelations revealing where God is greeting you in your life:

The Presence of God:  God is with me, but more, God is within me.  Let me dwell for a moment on God’s life-giving presence in my body, my mind, my heart, as I sit here right now.

Freedom: A thick and shapeless tree-trunk would never believe that it could become a statue, admired as a miracle of sculpture and would never submit itself to the chisel of the sculptor who sees by her genius what she can make of it.  I ask for the grace to let myself be shaped by my loving Creator.

Consciousness: Knowing that God loves me unconditionally, I can afford to be honest about how I am.  How has the last day been, and how do I feel now?  I share my feelings openly with the Lord.

The Word : I read today’s scripture and I listen.

Gospel Luke 1:39-45

Mary set out in those days
and traveled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth.
When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting,
the infant leaped in her womb,
and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord
would be fulfilled.”

Conversation: Do I notice myself reacting as I pray with the Word of God?  Do I feel challenged, comforted, angry?  Imagining Jesus sitting or standing by me, I speak out my feelings as one trusted friend to another.

Conclusion: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, World without end. Amen.
